In a Scottish town, the villagers are celebrating the wedding of Sir John de Mentieth and his bride Dee, when the feared treasurer of the English King Edward I, Hugh de Cressingham, turns up unexpectedly. He demands that Sir John de Mentieth pay the taxes due and finally swear an oath of allegiance to the English king. As Mentieth will not comply, Cressingham demands that he spend the night with de Mentieth\u2019s bride. A fight ensues between the opponents. At this moment, William Wallace appears on the scene, rushes to Mentieth\u2019s side and drives the english off. The village community cheers the saviour, but the village council worries about the future of Scotland. Wallace convinces them that it is time to fight back against the English oppressors. He would rather die fighting for freedom than continue to live under foreign bondage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile<\/span>, the English King Edward I is facing financial problems. His wish for higher tax revenues is not granted by the nobles, the clergy and the citizens of the country begin to revolt and England is on the brink of civil war. Ignoring all these problems, he goes to battle on the continent with a small army and places the leadership of his empire in the hands of Thomas Lancaster. He allowes him to set an example of the rebellious Scots.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On<\/span> 11th September 1297 the battle of Stirling takes place. An overpowering English army under the leadership of Cressingham is crushed by the Scots,
\nled by William Wallace and Andrew de Morray. Wallace becomes the leader and idol of the oppressed Scots.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When<\/span> Edward returns unsuccessfully from the war with France, he is furious to learn that Cressingham has suffered a defeat at Stirling. He now faces a two-front war. The scheming wife of Lancaster has the saving idea: the widowed Edward should marry the half-sister of the French king in order to reach a peace agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But<\/span> Wallace also wants to ally with France against England and so a small Scottish delegation sets off across the Channel. At the French court, Wallace meets Margaret, the aforementioned half-sister of the French king.
\nBoth are fascinated by each other and fall in love. The Scottish mission is successful, France allies with them and even the Pope supports the Scottish efforts for independence. Back in Scotland, William Wallace is appointed \u201eGuardian of the Scots\u201c and a boisterous feast is celebrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The<\/span> next morning, the Scots are awakened by a surprise attack by the English.
\n<\/span>This time the army is led by Edward himself, and thanks to their new longbows the English, from a safe distance, are able to destroy the Scottish army.
\nEdward, in the thrill of victory, now decides to marry Margaret in order to humiliate Wallace once and for all and to reach a peace treaty with France.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Margaret<\/span> has to travel to England for her wedding with the unknown king, while she is secretly in love with his archenemy. Her confidante Jeanne de Saint-Martin consoles her, advises her to forget Wallace and submit to fate.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile<\/span>, William Wallace roams restlessly through the Scottish Highlands. He searches for allies to join his guerrilla war against the English. But even his closest friends advise him to give up and bow to the English crown. He is not to be converted, however, and when he learns that Margaret is to marry Edward I, he feels even more betrayed and emboldened in his fight for Scotland.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A<\/span> glamorous wedding is celebrated in Canterbury, marred only by the fact that Wallace is still rebelling. Margaret learns that scouts have been sent to Scotland to finally track him down. Desperate, she turns to her confidante.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most<\/span> of the Scottish nobles and clan leaders gather in Glasgow to swear an oath of allegiance to Edward I, the English king. Wallace\u2019s closest friends have the idea that only Margaret can persuade him to take this oath as well, and they hope to use a ruse to let the queen in on their plan at the meeting. She allows herself to be persuaded to meet Wallace, however Mentieth has also caught wind of this plan. He decides to betray Wallace. Thus, disaster strikes: While Margaret and Wallace finally come together in the latter\u2019s hiding place, English soldiers advance and arrest the Scottish hero.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In einem schottischen Dorf feiert die Bev\u00f6lkerung ausgelassen die Hochzeit von Sir John de Mentieth und seiner Braut Dee, als v\u00f6llig \u00fcberraschend der gef\u00fcrchtete Schatzmeister des englischen K\u00f6nigs Edward I., Hugh de Cressingham, auftaucht. Er fordert Sir John de Mentieth auf, die f\u00e4lligen Steuern zu bezahlen und endlich dem englischen K\u00f6nig den Treueeid zu leisten. Da dieser dem nicht Folge leisten will und kann, verlangt Cressingham die Nacht mit dessen Braut zu verbringen. Es kommt zu einem Kampf zwischen den Kontrahenten. In diesem Moment erschein William Wallace auf der Szene, eilt Mentieth zu Hilfe und vertreibt die Engl\u00e4nder. Die Dorfgemeinschaft jubelt dem Retter zu, doch der Dorfrat macht sich Sorgen, \u00fcber die Zukunft Schottlands. Wallace \u00fcberzeugt sie, dass es an der Zeit ist, sich gegen die englischen Unterdr\u00fccker zu wehren. Er will lieber im Freiheitskampf sterben, als weiter unter fremder Knechtschaft leben zu m\u00fcssen.<\/p>\n

Derweil plagen den englischen K\u00f6nig Edward I. finanzielle Probleme. Seinem Wunsch nach h\u00f6heren Steuereinnahmen wird vonseiten der Adeligen nicht entsprochen, auch der Klerus und die B\u00fcrger des Landes fangen an zu revoltieren und so steht England kurz vor einem B\u00fcrgerkrieg. All diese Probleme ignorierend zieht er mit einer kleinen Armee in die Schlacht auf den Kontinent und legt die Leitung seines Reiches vertrauensvoll in die H\u00e4nde von Thomas Lancaster. Er gestattet diesem vor allem auch gegen\u00fcber den rebellischen Schotten ein Exempel zu statuieren.<\/p>\n

Ein \u00fcberm\u00e4chtiges englisches Heer unter der F\u00fchrung von Cressingham wird von den Schotten, angef\u00fchrt von William Wallace und Andrew de Morray, vernichtend geschlagen. Wallace wird zum Anf\u00fchrer und Idol der unterdr\u00fcckten Schotten.<\/p>\n

Er sieht sich nun einem zwei Fronten Krieg gegen\u00fcber. Die intrigante Ehefrau von Lancaster hat die rettende Idee: der verwitwete Edward soll die Halb-Schwester des franz\u00f6sischen K\u00f6nigs heiraten, um so zu einem Friedensabkommen zu gelangen.<\/p>\n

Am franz\u00f6sischen Hof trifft Wallace auf Margaret, die besagte Halb-Schwester des franz\u00f6sischen K\u00f6nigs. Beide sind fasziniert voneinander und verlieben sich. Die schottische Mission ist erfolgreich, Frankreich verb\u00fcndet sich mit ihnen und auch der Papst wird die schottischen Unabh\u00e4ngigskeitsbestrebungen unterst\u00fctzen.\u00a0 Zur\u00fcck in Schottland wird William Wallace zum \u201eGuardian oft the Scots\u201c (zum H\u00fcter Schottlands) bestimmt und ein ausgelassenes Fest wird gefeiert.<\/p>\n

Diesmal wird das Heer von Edward selbst angef\u00fchrt und dank ihrer neuen Langb\u00f6gen k\u00f6nnen die Engl\u00e4nder, aus sicherer Entfernung, die schottische Armee vernichten. William Wallace und einige wenige M\u00e4nner k\u00f6nnen in die Highlands fliehen.Edward im Rausch des Sieges beschlie\u00dft nun Margaret zu heiraten, um Wallace endg\u00fcltig zu dem\u00fctigen und um so zu einem Friedensvertrag mit Frankreich zu gelangen.<\/p>\n

Er ist aber nicht zu bekehren und als er erf\u00e4hrt, dass Margaret Edward I. heiraten wird, f\u00fchlt er sich noch mehr verraten und best\u00e4rkt in seinem Freiheitskampf.<\/p>\n

In der Schlacht von Stirling Bridge<\/em> werden die Engl\u00e4nder unter der F\u00fchrung von Andrew de Moray mit Hilfe von Willam Wallace vernichtend geschlagen. Doch de Moray wird schwer verletzt und stirbt. Die M\u00e4nner \u00fcberzeugen daraufhin Wallace, von nun an die F\u00fchrung der Schotten zu \u00fcbernehmen. William Wallace ist sich bewusst, dass er m\u00e4chtige Verb\u00fcndete gegen K\u00f6nig Edward I. von England ben\u00f6tigt. Daher beschlie\u00dft er, mit seinen engsten Vertrauten nach Frankreich zu reisen, um sich die Unterst\u00fctzung des franz\u00f6sischen K\u00f6nigs Philipp IV (auch der Sch\u00f6ne<\/em> genannt) zu sichern. Bei der Audienz f\u00e4llt ihm die Halbschwester des K\u00f6nigs, Margarethe, ins Auge. Es ist offensichtlich, dass die Beiden einander mehr als nur Bewunderung entgegenbringen. Das Gespr\u00e4ch mit dem K\u00f6nig hingegen f\u00fchrt zu keinem Ergebnis. Im Anschluss kommt es zur ersten direkten Begegnung von William Wallace und Margarethe. Die tiefe Anziehung zueinander ist greifbar. Nach Wallace Abschied wird Margarethe von ihren beiden Hofdamen mit der Tatsache konfrontiert, dass sie sich offensichtlich in William Wallace verliebt habe.<\/p>\n
